Impending Bayern Munich move shows the folly of West Ham rumours

West Ham United were strongly linked with a move for Inter Milan left-back Ivan Perisic over the summer.

The likes of The Sun linked the Hammers with a big money move for Perisic.

The battering West Ham took from Manchester City on the opening day showed they could certainly have done with the Croatian.

But West Ham fans were always realistic about the chances of the star coming to the London Stadium.

Bayern move shows folly of West Ham rumours

And the folly of those transfer rumours has been exposed by Perisic's impending move to European giants Bayern Munich.

Perisic has vowed to do his best for Bayern after passing a medical (Bild).

The reported West Ham target was in Munich to complete his move from Inter on Monday.

“I’ve just had my medical. I’ll do my best!” the 30-year-old told Bild.

The reigning Bundesliga champions have paid £4.5million to take Perisic on loan with a £20million option to buy next summer.

West Ham were never going to be able to compete with the likes of Bayern for a player of Perisic's quality.

Hammers failed to address glaring issues

But it does serve to highlight how Manuel Pellegrini will struggle to make true progress in East London without the financial backing to improve crucial areas of the squad.

West Ham's desperate need for new fullbacks and another option in defensive midfield has been glaringly obvious for years.

Failure to improve those areas yet again means the weakest area of a team which continues to ship goals is not going to get better anytime soon.

Pellegrini appears to have put all his eggs in one basket by handing the often hapless Arthur Masuaku a new five-year deal - with a two-year option no less.

On the other side Ryan Fredericks is still struggling to make the position his own.

Clickbait or did West Ham waste precious time chasing a lost cause?

West Ham are a Declan Rice injury away from a midfield crisis with only ageing flop Carlos Sanchez in reserve.

Many fans presumed West Ham's reported interest in Perisic was nothing more than clickbait.

But if the interest was genuine then the club are guilty of wasting precious time which could have been focused on more attainable targets.

What's done is done, though, and Pellegrini must now make the best of what he has.

The big positive is that Manchester City are out of the way. Things should be a lot more straightforward at Brighton.

But West Ham must turn up and lay down a marker for the season.
