'Low risk but huge potential' - Some West Ham fans excited by teenager's arrival

West Ham have snapped up their fifth new signing of the summer. The club's official website has announced the arrival of Goncalo Cardoso on a five-year deal. There is an option to extend his contract by a further 12 months in summer 2024.

Cardoso joins from Boavista for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £2.75m (Sky Sports News). The 18-year-old has already played 15 senior games in the Portuguese top-flight despite his young age and is highly rated.

The Portugal U19 defender has been scouted by West Ham and he finished runner-up with his country at this summer's U19 European Championships.

Dream come true

Upon joining West Ham, Cardoso told whufc.com: I am very excited and it’s a dream come true. I always dreamt of coming to England and now I’m here at this big, historic club, so I’m very happy.

Cardoso becomes West Ham's fifth signing after Roberto, David Martin, Pablo Fornals and Sebastian Haller. He will compete for centre-back spots with Fabian Balbuena, Issa Diop, Angelo Ogbonna and Winston Reid.

Here are some tweets from West Ham Fans after Cardoso was unveiled as West Ham's latest arrival.
