United linked with shock move for Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil is a shock target for Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, according to reports.

The Arsenal talisman is currently under contract with the Gunners until 2018.

But with the German yet to agree a new deal with the north London outfit, United are ready to make a move for him, The Sun claim.

Ozil is already the club’s highest earner on £180,000-a-week, and in pushing for a new deal, he is understood to want more than the £20,000-a-week rise they have already offered.

The report suggests Ozil and Jose Mourinho have a good relationship still following their time together at Real Madrid that saw them win La Liga in 2012.

However, United accept they won’t be able to lure him away from the Emirates in January, but they are ready to pursue his signature if Ozil fails to agree a new deal by the end of the summer.

While the midfielder is happy at Arsenal and enjoying his football, the Gunners may have to meet his £200,000-a-week demands to stop him being tempted by the prospect of a reunion with Mourinho.

The report suggests Ozil, along with Alexis Sanchez, both want hefty pay-rises that would see them eclipse the current £160,000-a-week salary Arsene Wenger takes home.

United would likely be able to exceed Ozil’s demands with an offer of £250,000-a-week, with the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger’s £10m-a-year wage off their books next summer.

Arsenal remain confident however that an agreement will be reached with their star man before the end of the season.
