REPORT: Detroit Lions to hire trio of coaches to new staff

As soon as the Super Bowl is wrapped up and the dust settles, the Detroit Lions are expected to name current New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia as their new head coach.

Patricia would likely already be the Lions head coach but NFL rules prohibit a team from negotiating and signing a coach of another team until their season is over.

But that does not mean Patricia has not reached out to coaches he wants on his staff so that the Lions can hire them.

According to Alex Marvez of the Sporting News, a source has told him the Lions are expected to hire a trio of coaches to their new staff including Jeff Davidson (offensive line), George Godsey (QBs), and Brian Steward (DBs).

Godsey, who served as the Lions defensive assistant/special project coach in 2017 will make the move to quarterbacks coach where he will work closely with Matthew Stafford and the rest of the QBs on the roster. He has a tie to Patricia and the Patriots as he spent three seasons in New England where he was an offensive assistant (2011) and tight ends coach (2012-2013).

Davidson comes to the Lions from the Denver Broncos where he was the offensive line coach in 2017. Prior to his one season with the Broncos, he spent time as the offensive line coach with both the San Diego Chargers (2016) and the Minnesota Vikings (2011-2015). He was also the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers from 2007-2010.

Stewart has ties to Patricia as both were part of the Syracuse coaching staff in 2001. He has NFL experience as an assistant coach and spent 2007-2008 as the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator.
