REPORT: Detroit Lions pursuing a trio of defensive-minded head coach candidates

On Monday, the Detroit Lions announced that head coach Jim Caldwell has been notified that he will not be returning as the team’s head coach in 2018.

The move was no surprise at all as rumors were flying around everywhere that the Lions Week 16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals sealed Caldwell’s fate.

Now, general manager Bob Quinn will be charged with the all-important task of hiring the perfect head coach for the Lions organization.

One candidate who has already been rumored to be at the top of Quinn’s wish list is New England Patriots defensive coordinator, Matt Patricia.

According to reports, the Lions are also interested in meeting with Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and Houston Texans defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel.

Offensive line coach Ron Prince was also fired by the Lions on New Year’s Day, but there has not yet been any word on the what the team will do with offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter and defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. Both coordinators have also been mentioned as potential head coaching candidates, so there is no guarantee either would elect to stay in Detroit.

Bob Quinn is scheduled to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. today to discuss his decision to move on from Jim Caldwell and to talk about the road that lies ahead.

Despite having no running game whatsoever and being sacked way more than he would like, quarterback Matthew Stafford has played at an elite level. Because of that, it will be very interesting to see if Quinn elects to keep with some consistency when it comes to the offense. Of course, a lot will also depend on which direction the incoming head coach wants to go.
