JUST IN: Don’t look now but Detroit Lions could hire from within

The Detroit Lions have officially parted ways with head coach Jim Caldwell following four years of service.

On Monday, during their end of the season meeting, Lions general manager Bob Quinn made it clear to the players that his goal is to find a championship coach.

Rumors have been everywhere that the No. 1 candidate to become the Lions next head coach is New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia but with all of the other openings around the league, Patricia may be a tough get.

But what if that “championship coach” is already a member of the Lions coaching staff?

According to a report from Josina Anderson, Bob Quinn will do his best to find that out as Lions Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin is scheduled to interview for the team’s head coaching vacancy on Tuesday.

Austin, who has never been a head coach at either the college of NFL level, has been the Lions defensive coordinator since 2014. Each offseason, Austin’s name has come up as a candidate for various head coaching openings around the NFL.
