WEEK 7: Huskies and Wildcats clash, Wolverines and Spartans host top-10 clubs

We got ourselves another busy week of college hockey in the state of Michigan. Among the storylines include an in-state conference showdown in the Upper Peninsula, a pair of ranked teams hooking up, and the two Big Ten representatives playing their first conference home games.

FERRIS STATE BULLDOGS

RECAP: Ferris State (3-6-1) earned themselves a split against Michigan with an overtime win in the second of two games in Ann Arbor, after allowing seven goals to the Wolverines in the first matchup.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs return to their friendly confines in Big Rapids for a WCHA series against Alaska (3-5-2). The Nanooks had a good showing of their own last week, earning themselves a split at home against Bemidji State. The two teams met just once last season, also ta Ferris, with Alaska going 1-0-1 in the matchup.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Junior defenseman Ryker Killins potted the game-winning goal in overtime against Michigan last week, his second goal of the season. Killins already has four points through nine games played this season, after entering the year with just nine career points through 47 contests.

SCHEDULE: Friday (11/10) and Saturday (11/11) | 7:07 p.m ET

BROADCAST: WCHA.tv | 97.3 FM WDEE

LAKE SUPERIOR STATE LAKERS

RECAP: Lake Superior (2-6-2) played to a weekend draw at home against Alaska-Anchorage last weekend, but were outscored 6-4 in the two games against the Seawolves.

UP NEXT: The Lakers now hit the road for four straight games, beginning with two against Bowling Green (4-3-2). The Falcons went 1-0-1 last week against previously No. 20 Michigan Tech in Houghton. LSSU split their lone series with BGSU last season up in Sault Ste. Marie.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Senior J.T. Henke added to his WCHA-leading assist total with three helpers last week against Anchorage, giving him 11 on the season and 13 points to lead the Lakers. The Trenton-native did not record a point against Bowling Green last season, one of three teams that shut him out in that department.

SCHEDULE: Friday (11/10) at 7:37 p.m ET | Saturday (11/11) at 7:07 p.m. ET

BROADCAST: WCHA.tv | 99.5 FM WYSS

MICHIGAN WOLVERINES

RECAP: Michigan (5-3) nearly earned a sweep of Ferris State last week but those chances were dashed in overtime. The 7-goal outburst was the most for the Wolverines in a single game since November of 2015.

UP NEXT: U-M stays home this weekend to host mighty Minnesota (7-3). The No. 4 Gophers dominated Michigan State last weekend at home, and have outscored opponents 12-3 during their four-game winning streak. Michigan is 7-11 against Minnesota since the formation of the Big Ten in the 2013-14 season.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Junior Cooper Marody has been at the heart of Michigan’s production as of late. The Brighton-native has recorded multiple points in four straight games for the Wolverines. His 12 points through eight games are already three shy of his total from a year ago.

SCHEDULE: Friday (11/10) and Saturday (11/11) | 7:35 p.m. ET

BROADCAST: Big Ten Network (SAT) | MGoBlueTV | 1050 AM WTKA

MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS

RECAP: Michigan State (4-4) stubbed their toe last week, mustering just one goal against a high-powered Minnesota club, allowing seven total goals to the Gophers. Granted, MSU was trying to score on one of the nation’s best netminders in Nate Schierhorn, who stopped 46 Spartan shots on goal.

UP NEXT: It doesn’t get any easier for the Spartans this week. They return home to host another top-10 Big Ten opponent in Wisconsin (6-4-1). Albeit a small sample, the Badgers are without a victory in regulation or overtime in three straight games. MSU is 7-9 against Bucky in the young history of the Big Ten.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Senior defenseman Carson Gatt has yet to find the back of the net this year through eight games. The Farmington Hills product tallied a goal last season against Wisconsin and could use a spark after going pointless in now three straight games.

SCHEDULE: Friday (11/10) and Saturday (11/11) | 7:05 p.m. ET

BROADCAST: BTN Plus | Spartan Sports Network

MICHIGAN TECH HUSKIES vs. NO. MICHIGAN WILDCATS

RECAP: Michigan Tech (4-5-2) lost a nail-biter to Bowling Green last week before tying the Falcons (losing the shootout) in the series finale, dropping out of the polls. Northern Michigan (5-3) salvaged a split at home last week against Minnesota State.

UP NEXT: The two rivals play the first of two scheduled home-and-home series this weekend. The first game (11/10) will be up in Houghton before the scene shifts to Marquette (11/11).The Wildcats won the most recent meeting but the Huskies have owned the all-time series as of late, winning eight of ten vs. NMU.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Northern Michigan junior Troy Loggins tallied three points in the 4-1 win over Minnesota State last week after going without a point in three of his previous four games played.

Michigan Tech senior Joel L’Esperance leads the Huskies with six goals this season. The Brighton-native, however, has just one goal over his last five games; his lone point in that same span as well.

SCHEDULE: Friday (11/10) and Saturday (11/11) | 7:07 p.m. ET

BROADCAST: WCHA.tv | Pasty.com (MTU) | 93.5 FM WKMJ (MTU) | 100.3 FM WUPT (NMU)

WESTERN MICHIGAN BRONCOS

RECAP: One would be hard-pressed to find a team that had a better weekend than Western Michigan (5-3-1). The Broncos unseated Denver from the top spot in the polls with a sweep of the Pioneers. There were 22 goals scored between the two teams in the series.

UP NEXT: WMU now hits the road for another NCHC challenge, heading west to play No. 12 Minnesota-Duluth (4-4-2). The Bulldogs are coming off a sweep at the hands of St. Cloud last weekend, getting outscored 10-3 by the Huskies. These two split both regular season series last season, but Duluth got the last laugh with a win over Western in the NCHC Tournament semifinals.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Sophomore Wade Allison racked up five points (4 G, 1 A) against Denver last weekend. He’s currently on pace to nearly double his point output from a year ago (29 points in 36 games). Allison, the NCHC Offensive Player of the Week, is now one of four Broncos with eight assists this season.

SCHEDULE: Friday (11/10) and Saturday (11/11) | 8:07 p.m. ET
