The New York Giants announced the hiring of former Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew on Thursday.
Mayhew will serve as the Giants director of football operations and special projects and will also help Giants assistant general manager Kevin Abrams on details with salary cap issues, CBA compliance, and player contract negotiations.
Mayhew, who was fired by the Lions following their week 8 blowout loss to Kansas City in London, had been working for Detroit since 2001 and had been the Lions GM since late 2008.
The Giants Front Office position opened up after Detroit hired Matt Harriss as their vice president of football administration, who had most recently worked with New York as their director of football operations.
The Lions made the playoffs twice with Mayhew as their GM and he was responsible for drafting many of the current players including Matthew Stafford, Ezekiel Ansah, and Darius Slay.
