Short on picks, trade rumors will fuel Capitals’ NHL draft intrigue

CHICAGO — The Washington Capitals’ philosophy is to prepare as though the team has a pick in every round of the NHL draft. “You never know what’s going to happen,” assistant general manager Ross Mahoney said. But unless Washington makes a move, the Capitals could be in for a quiet night in Chicago on Friday with the team not scheduled to make a selection until the fourth round. It’d be more surprising if Washington didn’t strike some sort of a deal at the draft. The Capitals have made 26 trades on draft day, including one in each of the past nine years. General Manager Brian MacLellan shook hands with Montreal’s Marc Bergevin on the draft floor in Buffalo a year ago just before the Capitals made
