Flavell: Let Todd Frazier Go

There’s no hiding the 2020 season could be a long one for the Pittsburgh Pirates. That’s why the organization should focus on having a young group of players showcasing their talents so the team can decide what players they want to keep for the future.

Todd Frazier, a 35-year old infielder, signed with the Pirates on February 19. Fans were rather excited because the penny-pinching Pirates signed a free agent that was actually recognizable.

As the spring went on, Frazier actually put together a solid campaign. Frazier put together a solid 12 games hitting .250/.353/.643 with three home runs over 12 games.

With Ke’Bryan Hayes taking over the hot corner for good, Frazier likely would’ve platooned with Colin Moran at first base. Instead, Frazier decided to opt out of his one year deal after being informed he wouldn’t make the Opening Day roster. At his age, Frazier would like to seek playing time on a major league roster.

If you’re a Pirates fan, why should this move bother you?

Sure, it’s nice to see a recognizable name from outside the organization signed. However, at 35-years old, Frazier is better served on a different roster.

Let Todd Frazier Go

The Pirates are going to be one of the worst teams in the league this season. They might even finish dead last for a second consecutive year. All they did this offseason was trade Josh Bell, Jameson Taillon, and Joe Musgrove. They’ll likely continue that roster purge with names like Adam Frazier, Gregory Polanco, and Chad Kuhl this season.

With that in mind, what is the purpose of having Frazier on the roster?

Having veteran presence on the roster is always a good idea. But the Pirates aren’t ready to win. That’s the kind of move you make if you need a veteran to show the young guys how to win. This season is fully about growing pains.

Guys like Hayes, Bryan Reynolds, and Mitch Keller will be the cornerstones of this team. They’re all 26-years old and younger. Jacob Stallings will be the oldest starter on the team at 31. They’re embracing the rebuild without admittedly using the word.

Frazier’s dismissal from the team likely gives way for Phillip Evans to make the team.

Evans was having a fantastic start to the 2020 shortened season. Batting .359 with a home run and nine RBI’s in 11 games, Evans got his season cut short after a collision with Polanco in foul territory. Diagnosed with a broken jaw and a concussion, Evans’ feel good story will get a second chance to be rewritten with the Frazier news.

With another painful season lying ahead, the Pirates were wise to grant Frazier his release. Give the look to a younger player like Evans and continue the youth movement to bring an eventual winner back to the Steel City.
