McGowens was originally a member of the 2019 class but after talking to Capel, who has clearly made his desire known to have a capable scoring guard, McGowens decided to reclassify and join the 2018 class meaning he will play for the Panthers this coming fall.
“I feel like coach [Jeff] Capel has a good vision for me and he will let me make mistakes without looking over my shoulder,” McGowens said. “He played the point guard and the two guard at a high level and I think he can help me where I want to go. He has a lot of knowledge.”
His commitment breathes a life of fresh air for Panthers faithful after the final years of Jamie Dixon and the ugly two-year Kevin Stallings tenure. He is the highest ranked recruit (80th in the nation according to Rivals.com) since Steven Adams in 2012.
Stallings’ highest recruit was guard Marcus Carr (101st in the nation) who has since announced that he will transfer.
McGowens is a 6’4″, 175 pound guard out of Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. He is an athletic freak and puts on a show dunking the ball. He provides the Panthers immediate help in the back court after the transfers of Carr and Parker Stewart.
Including McGowens, there are only seven players on the roster for the Panthers this coming season: Jared Wilson-Frame, Khameron Davis, Peace Ilegomah, Terrell Brown, Shamiel Stevenson and Samson George.
Malik Ellison, a St. John’s transfer who sat out last season, has yet to decide what he will do for the 2018-19′ season. Obviously, Capel still has more work to do to fill out his roster, let alone be competitive.

Panthers still likely to pursue Xavier Johnson
Even with the commitment from McGowens, Capel is still hot on the trails of point guard Xavier Johnson. Johnson is also a point guard from Virginia and is the 42nd ranked point guard in the country according to Rivals.com.
Standing at 6’1″, 175 lbs., Johnson is interested in Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Creighton, Nebraska, Pitt, and North Carolina State among others.
After McGowens committed, it’s likely the interest will diminish from Johnson but Capel needs point guard depth and will continue to go after him.
