Former Fat Albert pilot to lead TRAWING-5

PENSACOLA, Fla. — A former member of the Blue Angels flight demonstration squadron is returning to Northwest Florida to lead Training Air Wing FIVE at NAS Whiting Field. Colonel David Morris will assume command of the wing during a ceremony Friday at the National Museum of Naval Aviation. He reported to the Blue Angels in August 2000 and flew their C-130, known as Fat Albert, during air shows from 2001 to 2003. Morris completed four years of enlisted, active service in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1989, graduated from Fairmont State University, Virginia, in 1992, then returned to active duty as an officer. Since then, his duty stations have included Naval Station Mayport, Florida; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and the Pentagon. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with V, the Defense Superior Service Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon. Morris has been serving with Training Air Wing FIVE since 2015 and assumed the position of Deputy Commodore in March 2016. His promotion Friday brings with it the title of Commodore. A statement from the base says this will be his final tour of duty. He replaces CAPT Mark Murray, who assumed command of TRAWING-5 in March 2016.
