Flying with the Blues

The Navy’s Blue Angels aren’t scheduled to perform for the public until this weekend, but they’ve already begun soaring over the friendly skies. Known as some of the world’s most skilled aviators, the Blue Angels are a demonstration team designed to entertain and educate the public on the Navy’s aerial operations, capabilities and commitment to excellence. That skill was experienced firsthand this week by Flour Bluff High School’s football coach and athletic director, Chris Steinbruck, Veterans Memorial High School’s Cody Simper, who holds the same titles, and Caller-Times reporter Matt Woolbright. The team of pilots are scheduled to practice for their weekend performances Thursday and Friday afternoon, and a series of public events are scheduled for the pilots on Friday. The culmination of that public outreach is a 6:30 p.m. event at Veterans Memorial High School where the entire team will answer questions and sign autographs. The event is open to the public and free of charge. Naval Air Station Corpus Christi is the site of the weekend’s Wings Over South Texas airshow, which is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
