Modes Of Nutrition

Nutrition is Defined as the process of obtaining nutrients or food and utilising them. It is of two types: autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition.

Autotrophic nutrition is defined as the process in which Organisms prepares their food on their own.

Heterotrophic nutrition is defined as the process in which organisms obtain their food from other organisms.

Autotrophic nutrition further divided into:

A) Phototrophic nutrition: It is defined as the process in which organisms prepares their food in the presence of (photo means light) sunlight. Example: green plants.

B)  Chemotrophic nutrition: It is defined as the process in which organisms prepares their own food in the presence of (chemo means chemicals) chemicals such as hydrogen sulphate. Example: sulphur bacteria.

Heterotrophic nutrition further divided into:

A) Holozoic: This type of nutrition involves ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation and egestion. Example: humans.

B) Saprophytic: It is defined as the process in which organisms feed on dead and decaying organic matters. Example: decomposers.

C) Parasitic: It is defined as the process in which organisms one organism such as parasite lives inside the other organism such as host organism to get nutrients. Example: tapeworm.
