Five Unavoidable Challenges of Distance Learning

Distance learning programs have been offered for years, but they became common during the COVID breakout. All educational institutes could either completely stop their classes or use technology for remote teaching. While this was no doubt a feasible solution, it had its challenges. Once you overcome these challenges, no Student or teacher will have any problem with distance learning.

Improper Teaching Approach

Many teachers follow the same teaching approach that they do in the classroom. You have a different environment when studying online, which requires a different and more innovative style. Simply creating slides and explaining them is definitely a bad choice. Teachers of mathematics particularly need to arrange a good camera and reserve an entire room with a whiteboard. Their live streaming mixed with math workbooks for distance learning will make online education more efficient.

No Peer-Based Learning

Students learn just as much from class fellows as their teachers. Even little kids get encouraged seeing their other class fellows. No teacher, no matter how good, can make up for this. Students need peers to enhance their learning. They unintentionally motivate each other to do their best and keep coming to attend classes.

Difficult to Discipline Students

Self-discipline is not an easy trait to attain. It’s rarely found in any student. There is a reason why there are so many supervisors even in professional environments. Teachers usually make sure that students attend all classes and study not only school but also at home. They give enough homework and tests that students have no other option but to revise what they learn in the school. If a student doesn’t have self-discipline, he can’t attend all classes regularly. Teachers and parents have an important role to play here. They must keep students engaged and constantly supervise them for the sake for their education.

Unavailability of the Internet

There are still internet connectivity issues, even in the most developed countries. Besides, live streaming requires high-speed internet or the video keeps stuttering. Students won’t be able to learn anything if they can’t properly understand the teacher. In many areas, students keep disconnecting due to the unavailability of a stable internet connection. Unless educational institutes or the government takes proper measures, this issue can’t be resolved. If the students have to go out to an internet café, then there is no point in distance learning.

No Support for Weak Students

Students who like studying can survive in every situation. The real problem is for students who were already weak. Such students require special attention from their instructors. The teacher especially asks them questions and writes comments on their homework and tests to improve them. Good teachers know that their job is to help all students make a better future for them. Simply grading and separating weak students is not enough.

Lack of Educational Atmosphere

Among all problems, we can’t underestimate the value of the environment. There are way too many distractions at home. Schools are specially designed for education where students have all resources and help available. They regularly see their class fellows and visit teachers when they have some questions. There is no such facility in distance learning.
