If you carefully analyze higher order thinking, it would be reciprocating the same manner in which someone has told to you something. When a person gives back the information he has learned in exactly the same way it is a memory.

You can confer it like a robot as it is programmed in order to give out information. There does not exist any creative angle to it at all. With HOT you take your creative insights to a different angle, and not just illustrating the facts. With HOT you would need to work on the facts.

We would need to understand it and then connect with them in novel ways as well.

  • Concrete concepts are those which we are able to hear, smell or taste. When it is a case of abstract concepts it is all in the mind. We need to use our senses in order to understand or for the matter recognize them. So it is quite clear that concrete concepts are easy to understand.
  • Nonverbal or verbal communication- with verbal concepts you need to use language so that you are able to explain them. In case of nonverbal concepts, you would need to visualize them in order to understand it in a better way.

Schemas :

The moment when a student picks up a new concept, he needs to link with the old ones in mind. They can undertake this by classifying and the process of chaining.

You would need to find all the relatives and then make a family tree.

With chaining, you can go on to connect concepts. All of them go on to have a common thread.

As a student, you would need to pay a lot of attention to horizontal threading so you connect your mind to the similar concepts as well in this regard, the example that comes to our mind is history themes.

With schema, a student goes on to add new knowledge to the old one that is already in the brain. For example, a student may be presented with a lot of information about a reptile along with visual images. Now when he confronts a creature he is in a position to identify whether it is a reptile or not with all the information he has.

Schemas link itself to the rules of patterns that we have in our mind.

Students may have gone on to master a particular rule in grammar and then the teacher would throw up an exception. With schemas, you are in a position to make helpful predictions.

Visualizing :

The brain is the epicenter of all forms of thinking. But all of them are not in the form of words. In certain cases, you need to incorporate visual images that convey the same meaning as words.

For example, if you need to give directions to a person in order to reach a place. You will have to visualize a map in your mind.

For the matter when you are reading a book, do you visualize the name of the characters in your mind?

If you confront all these challenges then a perfect combination of cognitive maps with the good visual image is attached.

They are a vital cog in the wheel in terms of higher order thinking. Students of literature or maths can immensely benefit from it.

Solving problems :

Problems are a part and parcel of our daily life. You can sum it up in the form of” No problem, no life” From the moment you get up to the time you wind up your day you are solving problems.

Problems do take a toll on your social, personal and health at the same time.

In our school life, problem-solving is a must. To the problems that we are going to solve, in understanding who will sit beside you at lunch are all part of problem-solving exercises. A student needs to find answers to all these questions.

As far as the question of problem-solving comes into the foray we need to be aware of the steps we need to take. You would need to define the problem. Then go on formulate mental edges around it.

Try as far as possible to be creative and devise alternative strategies around it. You can try out the outcomes without paying much heed to solutions.

Mistake provides you an opportunity to learn new things. Simply if you do not make mistakes how are you going to learn!
