A Peek into Every New Yorker’s Backyard: Guest Post on Central Park by Leela Kapoor

This week we have a guest post on Central Park by Konverser Leela Kapoor, who is proud to call New York City home.

From mini boat racing to working out by the reservoir, Central Park really has it all. It is 842 acres and goes from 59th Street to 110th Street. It was one of the first parks in the US built using techniques from landscape architecture. The park’s construction began in 1857 after the design won a contest. It was finally finished in 1875 and ready to have people inside. 

Present-day Central Park has so much to do. You can go in a horse carriage for thirty peaceful minutes, spending more money than all that room service cost last night. You can walk around the reservoir and experience the wonderful sights of sweaty runners and cute old walking groups. There are lots of tours there too, including bike tours, walking tours, and rickshaw tours. The greenery of the park is such a nice setting for a fun picnic with good food and a frisbee to throw around. If you don’t want to bring your own food, there are tons of concession stands throughout the park and many cute little cafes and nice places to eat or just sit down and relax your feet after a long day of walking through the city. Of course, if you haven’t heard already, Central Park has an amazing zoo. Filled with bears and birds and rodents and reptiles, I bet you your pupils will not believe it. You can also see Central Park by boat. Just imagine listening to peaceful water moving slowly while the trees are blowing wind on your face and the warm sun kisses your cheeks. Just amazing. I can’t pile everything you could do there into a small piece like this, so you’ll just have to go and see it for yourself. 

Now moving on from the attractions. Real New Yorkers go there every day, and lots of interesting stuff happens. I like to call it the mysterious murders and marriages of Central Park. The number of people I have seen taking aesthetically pleasing wedding photos in the park in countless. I heard that Tom Cruise has crashed a couples wedding photos. 

Next up, the weird Central Park mysteries. First, a man claimed to have seen a three-foot tall hairy human-looking creature wandering the park at night. Second, there was a caiman (a reptile that is part of the crocodile family) swimming in one of the Central Park lakes for a week. How about that? There have also been some grim, violent incidents in Central Park, but luckily those are few and far between.

Now, let’s move on to the movie world of Central Park. There are several famous movies that were shot right here in Central Park. One is a sweet romcom called 27 Dresses, known by almost every girl in America. Night at the Museum is a hilarious movie all kids must watch. Of course we can’t forget Spiderman 3. Shoutout to all the Tom Holland fans. The Hitch and The Devil Wears Prada both came out the same year and are both awesome movies that are absolutely worth the watch. When Harry Met Sally and You’ve Got Mail are both spot-on five-star films. And last but not least, we can’t forget Home Alone.
