Unwillingness To Lend Players To Gilas A Form of Silent Protest Againts MVP?

The old ghosts of the past may be haunting Philippine basketball once again. Roughly two months before the FIBA Asia Championships in Changsha, Hunan Province, China, the Gilas Pilipinas team was still trying to get permissions to loan players from PBA ballclubs. It has also been rumored that Gilas head coach Tab Baldwin has had some challenging moments in some of his meetings with PBA team owners. Gossip is ripe that many PBA team owners are unwilling to Lend Players to the national cause or in some cases, only willing to lend one player per team.

Gilas 3.0 Pool Hold-up

While coach Tab has already started some practices with the Gilas pool, it is an open secret that he did not get permission from PBA team owners to borrow all the players that he initially wanted to be part of the pool. According to some reports, only a handful of players from the teams outside the MVP group have been given the green light to join the Gilas 3.0 pool. It will come as no surprise when we shall soon see a national pool that will be composed of players who are mostly from the PBA teams of NLEX Road Warriors, Talk N'Text Tropang Texters, and Meralco Bolts.

The Paul Lee Saga

In the lead up to the 2014 FIBA World Cup, Paul Lee's contract with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters expired. Controversy soon broke as contract negotiations were stalled between Lee and Rain or Shine with rumor suggesting that the sweet-shooting guard is being sweet-talked into not renewing his contract with Rain or Shine and signing a new one with one of the MVP-affiliated teams. While the supposed transfer did not happen, it must have left a bad taste for other team owners who were once open to the idea of lending players to an MVP-sponsored national team.

Supposedly, this is not the first time it happened and attempts to do so in the past have actually been completed. It is this player piracy issue that has PBA teams now unwilling to lend players to the national team pool, specially those that have expiring contracts.
