The Greatest Satisfaction I’ve ever Had on a Boat

Giovanni Pomari is a passionate sailor who fulfilled his dream: to become a Rya yachtmaster offshore. We are very happy to share his story and his emotions. And if you need to know more about Giovanni, follow his Instagram profile: https://www.instagram.com/sailing.pomo/

The desire was born from my and my wife’s desire to try to change our lifes and one day, closer and closer, live in asailing boat and organize boat holidays. Hence the need to have a commercial title to be able to do so in accordance with the rules.

I inquired and the road that most excited me was that of the RYA yachtmaster commercially endorsed.

I knew it wouldn’t be easy, keeping my curent job, if I could find time to study, take the course, take the exam, then all the STCW courses and all the other courses to get to the commercial endorsement, but every long way goes one step at a time, and so I made the first.

I inquired about what it meant to become an YM and what experiences and skills were needed and immediately realized that it needed a preparation at a different level from mine based mainly on my experiences a simple lover of holiday sailing.

So the first step, even before I enrolled in the course, was to study. Study really a lot. I bought as many books as possible, especially those recommended by RYA, and I began to approach my passion in a completely different, methodical and professional way.

Every time I had the chance to go out on the boat I tried to have a different attitude to see if it was in my ability to face this adventure.

Then in November 2019 I decided and I enrolled in the course that would take place in Venice in the RYA school Venice 4 sea, in the early months of 2020, when we still did not know what the Covid-19 really was.

From the start the theoretical course turned out to be at an even higher level of my expectations and I realized that without the study, that lasted almost a year before the course, I would never have kept up.

The lessons lasted all day and in the evening there were homework, really intense. I immediately realized the serious and professional approach that our instructor had and was looking for in usand this excited me and gave me even more motivation.

I tried even harder and put all my passion into this new experience. After the theoretical course there was the practical course in sailing. Also this part was very challenging and equally formative.

Five days sailing 14-18 hours a day where we addressed any topic in a truly in-depth.

The instructor really helped us to have a different and deeper awareness of the environment, the method, the seriousness and the preparation needed to become an YM.

Venice has proved to be a fantastic setting, both from the point of view of the enchanted beauty of the places that made me fall in love with this magical city, and from the technical point of view it has proved to be an extremely complete gym for navigation, there is everything you need.

It is also a place with a very prestigious maritime history and it is nice to take the YM in such a historically important place. The commitment and the result required are really high. There is not a single topic that was not analyzed in those days, and each topic has shown itself with its real and great importance that concretely has out at sea.

I am thinking, for example, of IRPCS, the rules for preventing collisions at sea.

We all know, and always learn, a small part that rightly seems to us can be enough to navigate but in reality the rules are deep detailed and many situations we would evaluate them differently knowing them deeply.

The recovery of man overboard is a fundamental procedure and is concretely and practically addressed in all possible scenarios.

On all the aspects that affect safety when we are at sea a maximum preparation is required. Everything is planned with this logic, being theoretically prepared, knowing how to act safely. Becoming YM means being able to navigate always and in every condition, in safety.

Be able to avoid situations where you would not navigate safely, be able to recognize such situations before they occur and be able to handle unforeseen situations while always trying to prevent them from occurring.

Then comes the big day: the day of the exam.

Clearly the tension is felt but manage this tension with clarity is just something that you learn during the course (unfortunately you notice this only after the exam).

One wonders what will happen, what the examiner will expect from us, how best to behave; the classic doubts before every examination. All the doubts were immediately clarified by the examiner: the exam consists simply in making me feel comfortable entrusting you my nephew to cross the English channel at night. Well.. relaxing premise.

But it is really this, a concrete and realistic assessment of one’s own skills and abilities, carried out by an extremely competent and skilled sailor.

The exam is intense and takes place at most 2 candidates at a time and you really face everything, luck or bad luck will definitely not matter that day, that long day.

It is an extremely concrete and real route, based on the practice of everyday navigation by sea.

The instructors, the examiners, are people of a really rare preparation, competence and experience and having their approval is certainly a source of pride and gives a new awareness of your abilities. I thank them for that.

It was an important step for me that I am proud of. I then immediately decided to do the engine conversion and I did it with enthusiasm throughout the practical course again.

The passion that has taken place within me is more and more and my love for the sea is always greater.

My goal now is to be able to board a boat over 20 meters and accumulate experience and then take the MCA200 and then, who knows…

One step at a time. Every day one step.
