Lisa Blair has passed Cape Horn as she continues her Antarctica circumnavigation attempt

Lisa Blair has passed Cape Horn as she continues her journey to become the first woman to circumnavigate Antarctica: solo, non-stop and unassisted.

The 32-year-old is also on track to being the fastest, and only the third person to ever accomplish this feat. Day 49 was marked with Lisa’s first sighting of land – the snow capped mountains of Chile – since departing Albany, Western Australia on January 2017.

Her 50th day, Monday, 13 March, saw her round Cape Horn with an elapsed time of 50 days, 7 hours, 44 minutes, 00 seconds.

Lisa aims to become the first women to:

  • Circumnavigate Antarctica: solo, non-stop and unassisted
  • Circumnavigate below 45 degrees South
  • Compete in the Antarctica Cup Ocean Yacht Race
  • And, break the current record set by Fedor Konyukhov (102 days, 35 minutes, and 50 seconds)

The boat

Originally named Funnel-Web and commissioned by Ivan and Sibby McFadyen to be raced in the 2003 Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. The Duo finished third over the line. Following that the yacht was raced in the 2004 Rolex Sydney to Hobart and finished 48th overall in a race where 59 vessels finished and 57 retired. Again contesting in the 2013 Melbourne to Osaka finally sailed in the 2013 Transpac Honolulu Yacht Race.

Lisa became the brand new owner of Funnel-Web the same day the entries to the Rolex Sydney to Hobart closed (end of October, 2015) so she quickly submitted her application to race. Lisa races as Master and owner of vessel with a crew of 7 in the 2015 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race finishing 54th on Line Honours and 13th with PHS handicap.
