Bruins forward Brad Marchand scored a goal for his fifth straight game on Thursday to propel the Boston to a 6-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at MTS Centre. The winger now has 11 goals in his last 11 games, only failing to score in a 6-2 loss to Anaheim on January 26 since mid-January.
Badly in need of a strong performance after an embarrassing 9-2 loss to Los Angeles on Tuesday, the Bruins got off to a great start on Thursday night, when Patrice Bergeron batted it past former UMass Lowell standout Connor Hellebuyck just 1:38 into the game for an early 1-0 Boston lead. Both defenses struggled in the opening frame, as Winnipeg’s Bryan Little and Nikolaj Ehlers and Boston’s Loui Eriksson and Marchand all found the net in the opening twenty minutes to give Boston a 3-2 lead heading to the intermission.
A scoreless second period followed an offensive first period, but featured an unexpected bout between Bergeron and Winnipeg forward Blake Wheeler. The fight was just Bergeron’s second career regular season fighting major, the other coming on December 21, 2013 against then-Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers.
Nineteen-year-old Bruins winger David Pastrnak gave the Bruins a much-needed insurance goal just 35 seconds into the third when he scored on his own rebound on a 2-on-1 to bring the Bruins lead to 4-2. Seven minutes later, Bergeron netted his second of the game on another rebound that sucked any remaining life out of the normally raucous MTS Centre crowd. Jimmy Hayes secured the victory with an empty-net goal with 4:48 remaining to send the fans to the exits.
The Bruins remained tied with Detroit for second place in the Atlantic Division standings, but are the only team in the top five spots in the Division that is idle on Friday night. The Bruins next hit the ice on Saturday afternoon, when they continue their Road Trip with a 2:00 p.m. start against the Minnesota Wild.
