Paul Pierce will make his return to the TD Garden on Wednesday night for what could be his final game in Boston. The former Celtics captain and now small forward for the Los Angeles Clippers, said in September that if his team won a title this year he would likely call it quits. While it seems hard to fathom the Golden State Warriors possibly losing a best-of-7 series to just about anyone, the Clippers could prove to be a dark horse come this spring, making tonight’s game a big one for the host Celtics.
At 35-17, the Clippers are nestled pretty comfortably in the fourth position in the NBA’s Western Conference standings, with a solid record that has been overshadowed by the 47-4 Warriors. The Clippers will be without leading scorer Blake Griffin, who is currently out with a broken hand, sustained in an altercation with a team employee last month in Toronto. Griffin was already out with a quadriceps injury when the incident occurred, and the hand injury tacked on at least another four to six weeks to his recovery time. The team announced Tuesday that upon the star’s return from injury, he would be suspended four games without pay for his involvement in the incident.
Despite the off-court distraction, the Clippers have done well on the court without Griffin. Since December 26, Griffin’s first game missed with the quad injury, the team is 18-4, including having won seven of their last eight since the incident in Toronto. Without Griffin, the Clippers will turn to point guard Chris Paul, who is second on the team averaging 19 points per game. Pierce, who is seeing very limited minutes for the Clippers this season, is averaging 5.7 points in just over 17 minutes per game.
