Bixente Lizarazu – “France could face adversity against the Germans”
Ex-French Euro and World Cup winner Bixente Lizarazu recently spoke to L’Equipe and expressed his concerns over France’s opening European Championship tie against Germany. This match is scheduled to commence on Tuesday evening.
Here, Lizarazu spoke with caution and said “We will have to make more defensive efforts. The lights are green. But there will be a very different adversity against the Germans. It is a team that also likes to have the ball.” With this in mind, he expects Germany to be far more of a test compared to their previous friendlies in the build-up to the competition.
If France slip up and lose their opening tie, then they could be in deep trouble. This year, they are placed in Group F, which has been dubbed “The group of death”, due to containing themselves, Germany, Portugal, and Hungary. This means a great side will not make it to the knockout stages.
He added, “France will be dealing with a team that plays a lot on the transition. We will have to make more defensive efforts. France has not been put to the test in this register on its two preparation matches.”
The French team will be rejuvenated due to Karim Benzema returning to help Kylian Mbappe lead the line up. However, they should also be aware of the German threat, that Lizarazu speaks about. Before retiring, Lizarazu played as left-back and featured in the French winning sides during their 1998 World Cup triumph and 2000 Euro’s win. With this in mind, he is often considered as the greatest ever left back to play for France.
