How have Preston shocked everyone with their performances this season
As we get to the latter part of this year’s EFL competition, there have been a few surprises. This is a very tough league. The Premier league might have some of the biggest teams in England but the Championships have the most ruthless. It’s been proven as we have seen a number of impressive Premier League sides be dropped in the division and struggle for mid table or are actually end up being relegated straight into League 1. The same goes for the Playoff spot. You could be 12th and still only find yourself 6 points behind the 6th spot. That’s how close this league is, and there are a few teams flirting with the playoff position and Preston North End is one of them. They can really make a surprise push for the play offs, something they haven’t been in since losing to Bolton in 2001 which can be seen with this infographic showing Preston’s entire history. But maybe they can make some new history by creeping into the playoff and quite possibly shocking the footballing world with a late resurgence and become a playoff team, which no one would have expected at the beginning of the season.
How have they shocked everyone?
I think the reason they have Shocked everyone this season is due to the fact that they can make the playoffs, which seemed very unlikely at the start of the season. Mathematically they are still in it the hunt and who knows? Anything can happen within this competition, so they might find themselves creeping in the playoffs for the first times in over a decade. All it takes is Preston to find themselves some momentum and discover a strong resurgence in the latter part of the season whilst hoping other teams drop points as well.
They have already shocked fans by showing that they are capable of beating the best teams in the division which was evident when they ended Brighton’s 17 match winning streak with a 2-0 win thanks to the goals by Huntington and Robinson. They are slowly building a bit of form now and are currently on a 3 match unbeaten streak, and slightly rejuvenated Aston Villa next- who they previously beat 2-0 earlier on in the competition.
They didn’t win the match but Preston North End were very unlucky to lose Premier division Arsenal in the FA Cup. Having scored first and looking likely to score another, they showed fans they have the determination in regards to giving a fight whether it’s in the FA cup or the Championship.. That said, they have shown promise and I wouldn’t be surprised if they do sneak in that playoff position, they just need to start taking points off of their rival competitors. Losing points against Wednesday with a 94th minute goal could have been avoided and only put them 3 points from the playoffs.
If they don’t get the playoff’s they should still look at this season as a success and build from it. They have shocked fans with recent results and their position should show that they are slowly becoming a top tier club in the Championship.
