Chelsea & Tottenham charged over ‘Battle of Bridge’; Dembele in trouble but Lamela, Costa & Rose escape

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have both been charged with three counts of failing to control their players and/or officials following Monday’s ‘Battle of the Bridge’.

In what was one of the spiciest London derbies in recent memory, the Football Association has identified incidents in the 45th and 87th minutes, and also at the end of the game.

Mousa Dembele is the one individual to have been sanctioned. The Spurs midfielder has been charged with an alleged act of Violent Conduct after appearing to gouge the eye of Diego Costa.

Reports have claimed that Dembele faces a 10-game ban rather than the usual three games, and the FA’s statement has indicated that he could indeed be punished more severely.

The statement read: “Meanwhile, Mousa Dembélé has been charged for an alleged act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video during the same game. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was involved in an incident with Chelsea’s Diego Costa near the end of the first half.

“Further, it is alleged the player’s behaviour constituted violent conduct in circumstances where the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient.

“The player has until 6pm on Thursday 5 May 2016 to respond to the charge.”

Dembele’s fate will be determined by a three-man panel of former elite referees.

It appears as though Costa has escaped punishment. Video footage emerged of the Chelsea striker appearing to bite someone in the post-game melee as the players approached the tunnel.

In that scuffle, it seemed as though Danny Rose may have pushed Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink to the ground. There has been no indication that the England full-back faces disciplinary action.

Tottenham winger Erik Lamela also appears to have got away with what may have been seen as a deliberate stamp on the hand of enraged Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

Spurs set a Premier League record for most players cautioned in a match. Nine of their players were shown yellow cards as their title dreams slipped away courtesy of the 2-2 draw.
