Why is Sergio Aguero underrated so ridiculously?

It’s a fair question! One that @VivaLaSergio just can’t answer, try as he might!

BY HARRY THOMPSON

After a dismal year domestically for Manchester City, one thing stays the same; Sergio Aguero hitting the back of the net.

This term, Aguero has netted 35 goals in 45 appearances across four competitions, so why is his incredible goalscoring record taken for granted every season? Every season I ask myself: ‘How on earth can he not be nominated for individual awards after scoring 30+ goals?’ It completely and utterly baffles me.

A player who burst onto the scene as soon as he stepped on the Etihad turf on his debut, Aguero has gone on to score a staggering 101 goals for Manchester City. But why do we overlook him? Why isn’t he spoken of among the best strikers that have ever graced the Premier League? Personally, I can’t think of a logical answer for that.

Aguero, obviously, is not a player who plays the game just for individual awards and personal recognition, but they still represent something in today’s game. But surely, with such incredible figures, Aguero should at least be considered for awards such as the PFA Player of the Year. For example, despite winning the Golden Boot award last year, Aguero didn’t make the PFA Team of the Year. It’s moments like these that make me wonder what Sergio Aguero has to do to get a mention in individual awards.

Big Game Player

Not only does he have a consistent record in front of goal, Agüero has conjured up some very, very important goals for Manchester City through the years. His title-winning goal in 2012 is the obvious stand out, a momentous moment for City, where he showed opportunism and calmness to slot the ball home to send Blues’ fans into raptures. But this doesn’t entirely define him – as both his teammates and City fans have relied on his incredible talent on countless occasions, and rightly so.

Under appreciated

By no means am I suggesting that Aguero is underrated, I’m implying that his talent may be taken for granted in England. This season, Kun has a record of a goal every 97 minutes, the best in the Premier League by quite a distance – closely followed by Manchester City starlet, Kelechi Iheanacho. The point is, Aguero consistently finds the back of the net. Any angle, any distance, any method – you expect the net to bulge when Sergio Aguero is lurking. It hasn’t exactly been easy for Sergio since his arrival, with injuries being the main problem. Every season, he misses approximately 10-15 games for City through injuries; he still manages to score an astonishing amount of goals, however, despite his stop-start seasons.

For a striker, goalscoring is an integral part of their overall game. Having scored so many goals since his arrival, it shows no sign of stopping – especially with Pep Guardiola taking charge at the Etihad next season, as Aguero looks set to excel under him, along with Manchester City as a club.

To name a few; Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane, N’Golo Kante and Dele Alli have all rightly been given plaudits from pundits and football fans, but why isn’t Sergio Aguero given enough recognition among those players?

Looking at this season individually, I struggle to find an answer for that. With three games left, Aguero could potentially overtake Harry Kane and win consecutive Golden Boot awards. And even if that happens, will we still continue to overlook his wonderful scoring record?

I know City fans like myself cannot even imagine a Manchester City team without Sergio Aguero in it. A player who can muster up a moment of brilliance out of nowhere and get us out of a difficult position in an instance. It’s moments like the last-minute winner against QPR that optimises Aguero perfectly; determination, skill, composure. This is why us City fans are delirious about him.

Perhaps, if this happens, it will lead to people starting to realise that we are witnessing one of not only the Premier League’s best ever strikers, but one of the finest who have ever graced the Premier League.
