Manchester United: van Gaal admits that striker’s scoring record has caught his eye

Manchester United coach Louis Van Gaal has admitted that Everton striker Romelu Lukaku is ‘very interesting’ because of his goalscoring form.

The Belgium international drew a blank on Sunday, as United defeated the Toffees 1-0 at Goodison Park thanks to Anthony Martial’s strike, and while Lukaku endured a miserable outing, his form throughout the campaign has caught the eye of van Gaal.

“He (Lukaku) is very interesting. When you score a lot of goals, you are always a potential candidate for clubs. Football is like that,” van Gaal told journalists ahead of the match, as per the Mirror.

“When you look at scoring goals and making assists, he (Lukaku) does that at the highest level in the Premier League,” van Gaal continued.

“But I think every club in the world is comparing strikers.”

It’s easy to see why Lukaku’s record has so piqued the interest of van Gaal; the Belgian forward has scored 18 goals in 30 outings so far this season, contributing six assists, improving markedly from last term, when he bagged 10 goals and contributed five assists in 36 EPL showings.

Sunday’s victory takes United up to fifth on 53 points. The Red Devils sit one point behind rivals Manchester City in fourth, but are firmly in the hunt for the final Champions League spot with seven matches still to play.

With West Ham United taking only a point from Crystal Palace at home, the Hammers drop to sixth on 51 points.
