Crystal Palace eye Everton midfielder as Eagles look to bolster squad in January despite £51.5m summer spree

Crystal Palace are reportedly eyeing up a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy when the transfer window reopens in January.

Palace spent £51.5m on new signings over the summer according to talkSPORT, but the Eagles – sponsored by Casino.com head company Mansion Group Limited and backed by wealthy businessman Steve Parish – seemingly have more shopping to do.

The Daily Star claim that Palace are set to challenge Celtic for the signature of Irishman McCarthy. The Star report that Palace wanted McCarthy earlier this year and have now revived their interest, while Scottish champions Celtic are said to be considering a loan bid.

Despite breaking their six-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over Southampton last weekend, Palace are just two points above the Premier League’s relegation zone.

McCarthy would be a good addition to Alan Pardew’s squad. The 26-year-old was a favourite of former Everton manager Roberto Martinez, but he has only featured in four Premier League games under new boss Ronald Koeman this season.

Palace have conceded 26 Prem goals this term. McCarthy would presumably be tasked with protecting Pardew’s backline, using his superb tackling ability and defensive awareness to help tighten things up at Selhurst Park

But McCarthy is more than just a sitting midfielder. He is blessed with a brilliant engine too, giving him the power to run box-to-box.
