Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has revealed that the only reason he would leave the club was if Diego Simeone went first.
The 25-year-old has firmly established himself as one of the top players in Europe since joining the capital club, and Simeone’s influence on his development is evidently not under-valued.
Talk was growing last week that Manchester United could make a move for the French international and smash their club record transfer fee for him next summer, as noted by The Sun.
However, Griezmann is keen to point out that he’s happy in Madrid and as long as Simeone is still his coach, then things will not change.
“The only doubt would be if Simeone leaves for PSG or wherever,” Griezmann told Telefoot, as noted by Sky Sports. “I called him before extending my contract and he confirmed to me that he was staying. I can learn a lot from him.
“PSG are not my goal at the moment. I’m happy in Spain. I’m always proud to be popular with the fans. I try to smile and do my best. If they like it, it’s even better.”
Griezmann signed a new deal with the La Liga giants earlier this summer to keep him at the club until 2021, while Simeone signed a new contract last March which ties him to Atleti until 2020.
Provided that the pair can continue to lead the club forward and be successful, then there is likely to be little reason as to why either would want to leave.
Atleti continue to strengthen their squad, and having pushed Barcelona and Real Madrid close in the title race last season as well as having reached the Champions League final for the second time in three years, things are looking good for Simeone as he aims to push them to the next level.
Griezmann was influential in those runs last year, scoring 32 goals in 54 appearances in all competitions, his best return yet after scoring 25 the previous season.
