Chelsea are reportedly considering offering a deal to free agent Martin Caceres, giving him a chance to secure a reunion with Antonio Conte after their time at Juventus.
The Uruguayan international, who has 68 caps to his name, left the Serie A champions at the end of last season following the expiration of his contract with the club.
Despite interest from several other Italian clubs this summer, the 29-year-old remains available on a free transfer, and according Calciomercato, Chelsea may swoop in and snap him up.
Conte was a busy man on deadline day, with Marcos Alonso and David Luiz arriving to bolster his defence which remained a priority right up to the end of the transfer window.
Having seemingly addressed the issue with two new faces, it appears as though his work is not yet done as Caceres could arrive to further strengthen his defensive options.
The move for Luiz raised plenty of eyebrows, and question marks still hang over the Brazilian international’s ability to be a reliable defensive presence for the Blues.
Conte was undoubtedly in a difficult position with a lack of quality and depth behind first-choice pairing Gary Cahill and John Terry, but he has now eased that headache.
Caceres would undoubtedly bring plenty of experience and quality to the squad were he to arrive at Stamford Bridge, and so it remains to be seen if Conte signs him up as he looks to solidify his squad and ensure that they maintain their early-season form which has seen them win their first three Premier League games.
