The Pirates finally entered the free agent fray – not in exciting fashion, of course – but with a move that looks like it could have a good chance at being one of their typical under the radar but effective Bullpen pickups.

One year, three million dollars. Nicasio didn’t have a bad year at all with the Dodgers, but they non tendered him last week. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: the guy throws hard, has excellent “stuff” (to the tune of 10 K’s/9 this year), but has some control issues (4.9 BB/9). It added up to a 3.86 ERA and a 2.83 FIP, though, so I’d certainly welcome that in the bullpen. (He wasn’t quite as successful in prior years, but seems like a prime candidate to succeed here, as other similar types have.)
He should probably start out as a guy toward the front end – sixth, seventh inning-ish guy with a chance to develop a bigger role if he performs. The Pirates have some work to do in the bullpen this winter with Joakim Soria (already signed with KC), Antonio Bastardo, and Joe Blanton becoming free agents and Mark Melancon potentially being on the trade block. This looks like a pretty good start to me.
