Keep an eye on these guys!

With the baseball season fast approaching, the Huskers are predicted to finish in the middle of the Big Ten standings. Nebraska will need their standout players like Spencer Schwellenbach and newcomers like Omaha native Max Anderson to play well so the Huskers can make some noise in the Big Ten.

Chance Hroch, RHP Pitcher

A graduate transfer from New Mexico State, Hroch was key to the Aggie’s pitching staff. In 2019, he went 10-1 in 15 starts with a 2.74 ERA, striking out 69 batters in 85.1 innings pitched. In limited action last season, Horch complied 20 strikeouts in 25 innings worked, going 2-1 in four starts. Horch will help with one of the projected issues for Nebraska as there is still uncertainty on who will start and who will be in the bullpen at the start of the season.

Max Anderson, Infielder

An upcoming freshman, Max Anderson shined at Millard West. He was named the 2019-2020 Gatorade Player of the Year in Nebraska after helping Millard West win the Class A state title in 2019. In the 2019 season, he hit 10 home runs and drove in 28 runs, finishing the season with a cool .353 batting average. Anderson will be the Husker’s starting third baseman, already impressing manager Will Bolt.

Leighton Banjoff, INF/OF

As a freshman, Banjoff burst on the scene last year for the Huskers, earning freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball. In 13 starts, Banjoff led the team in batting average(.341), slugging percentage, and on-base percentage. He also hit three homes, drove in 13 runs, and scored 12 runs. Banjoff will look to continue where left off, leading a talented and deep offense for the Huskers.

Cam Chick, INF

Like Banjoff, Chick was one of the Husker's most productive hitters last season. He started all 15 games, leading the Husker in hits with 19. He shared the team-high in home runs with 4 and second on the team with RBI’s with 14. He also led the team in multi-hit games and produced four multi-RBI games. Chick will look to build upon his successful first two years, becoming an even more dangerous bat in the Husker’s lineup.

Cade Povich, LHP

There’s no question Povich has a strong arm, leading the Husker in strikeouts last season with 26. His 13.00 strikeout to walk ratio led the Big Ten and was ranked 19th in the nation. The issue was his 5.06 ERA, going 1-2 in his four starts. Before Povich transferred to Nebraska, he played at South Mountain Community in Arizona. There, Povich went 10-1 with 1.52 ERA, tossing eight complete games and five shutouts. If Povich can find that form again, he will be a deadly lefty for Coach Bolt to use.

Spencer Schwellenbach INF/RHP

Team captain Schwellenbach will be a dangerous bat in the heart of the Husker order, a Division 1 baseball second Team preseason All-American. Schwellenbach put up good numbers before the season ended last year, second in the team with 18 hits and 5 games with multiple hits. Scwellenbach is poised to have a breakout season, continuing where he left off last season. He also carries a dynamic heater, giving Nebraska a much-needed boost out of the bullpen.

For Nebraska to surpass expectations, they will need these six players to have a good season. It will be an interesting storyline to watch throughout the season to see how veterans like Schwellenbach and newcomers to the program like Anderson mesh.
