Creighton Blasts Nebraska, Clinches Season Series With 12-9 Victory

Not a pretty game

Lincoln, NE- Creighton slid by Nebraska on Tuesday night 12-9 to clinch the season series. Nebraska was dominated early on Tuesday night, and they continue to look lifeless after dropping a key series against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights over the weekend.

Nate Fisher started for the Huskers and gave up nine runs in four plus innings. Behind Fisher, Mike Waldron, Andrew Abrahamowicz, Keegan Watson, Byron Hood, Ben Klenke, and Jake Hohensee the Huskers got shelled for 11 runs.

After blowing a 4-2 lead Sunday in the rubber match Sunday, Nebraska fell behind early again on Tuesday night. Creighton struck Fisher for a pair of runs in the first inning. A double, an error, and then a pair of singles got Creighton a 2-0 lead before most fans had settled into their seats.

Besides a single run in the second, Creighton would continue to extend their lead, with single runs in both the third and fourth innings. The big inning for Creighton was the fifth when they platted six runs. Fisher gave up five straight hits to start the inning before a sacrifice bunt and a bases clearing double added onto the damage for the Jays.

Nebraska was able to close the deficit to six in the fifth inning when Jesse Wilkening hit a three run home run to right center field.

After Creighton got one back on a solo home run in the sixth, the Huskers closed the gap.

With Jays starter Preston Church out after six innings, Nebraska got into the Creighton bullpen. The Huskers got three singles and an error to start the seventh and close within 11-6. After a fielder’s choice, Gunner Hellstrom got a single to plate a seventh run and put runners on the corners. Luke Roskam and Jaxon Hallmark were unable to convert the runner at third and less than two out situation.

After Klenke made his season debut on the mound, Nebraska got closer in the eighth. The first two batters reached via the walk. Mojo Hagge came up to bat with a chance to get the Huskers within one, but he grounded into a double play after a questionable call on a possible ball four. Scott Schreiber followed with a home run to cut the deficit to two.

After Klenke allowed a walk to start the ninth, the Huskers went to Hohensee. A sac bunt, wild pitch, and a passed ball allowed the Jays to get a run back and make it a 12-9 game.

Nebraska went 1-2-3 in the ninth inning. The Huskers drop to 17-22 (4-9 Big Ten). Creighton meanwhile moves to 24-11 (3-5 Big East). Nebraska drops another game they really had no business losing. The midweek starter position continues to be another area of struggling. Nebraska remains stuck on three wins for the entire month of April.
