Nebrasketball: JPJ and the Huskers beat the Maryland Terps at Home

Nebraska hadn’t beaten Maryland at home since joining the Big Ten, that changed tonight

Things started out slow for both teams, but a hot start by Isaac Copeland would ensue for the Huskers. Copeland scored the teams first 4 points, ending with 6 points and 4 rebounds at the U16 Media Timeout.

Even though Cope caught fire, the rest of Nebraska and Maryland didn’t, with the score 10-7 at the U12 media timeout and the teams a combined 8-24 from the field.

The game went awry for a little bit as Bruno Fernando started to bully Isaiah Roby in the post, but a three by Cope and a poster dunk from James Palmer Jr. gave the Huskers a one point lead with 3:30 to go:

However, for the final 3:30 minutes, Maryland went on a 5-0 run to take a two point lead 32-30 after a Fernando offensive put-back as the expired. Yeah...only 5 points were scored over the final 3:30 minutes.

Palmer only had two points at the break, but most Husker fans knew that would change. Palmer scored seven points just in the first four minutes, along with Roby who scored six quick points.

Maryland would call another timeout to settle down and it worked, cutting Nebraska’s 9 point lead to 5 at the U12 media timeout and getting Jordy Tshimanga’s fourth foul called. I should be saying fourth “foul”, for Jordy posted someone up and was whistled for it.

Luckily the JPJ show would continue, scoring nine more points to get to 17 total at the U8 media timeout. He would then go on to score another seven before coming out to get his rest before the U4 media timeout.

Unfortunately, as soon as Palmer came out, Nebraska’s offense went on a cold spell, failing to score without Palmer on the court. That’s going to have to change if the Huskers want to make and succeed in the NCAA tournament.

When Palmer came back in, I figured he’d make some shots and end the field goal drought. I was so wrong. In the final 5:42 seconds, Nebraska didn’t make a single field goal. It was all free throws. Yet we won! 70-66 win!

In the second half, Nebraska scored 40 points, Palmer and Roby scored 35 of those. Anton Gill made one three and Glynn Watson Jr. made the free throws at the end. Tonight’s game differed a lot from their last two games, in which we saw a balanced and efficient scoring attack.

Tonight’s win was a must win for the Huskers, and they got the job done to get their sixth straight win. Win the final three, there’s a very good chance the Huskers go dancing.

Side note, the Huskers have won 12 out of their last 13 games against the spread..

And the bench is having fun!
