Nebraska Basketball: Nebraska 92 North Dakota 70

The Huskers blast the 2016-17 Big Sky Champs

An offensive spark that was absent in New York woke the Huskers up to defeat the North Dakota Hawks 92 to 70 in Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday.

Coming off the game where the men’s basketball team seemed slow, flat, and uninspired the Huskers pull out a strong win to go 3-1 on the year.

North Dakota came out strong but could only sustain it for a few minutes against Nebraska as the Huskers had one of their best shooing nights since last season. The Huskers took the lead early against the defending Big Sky champs and never looked back. The Huskers lead by as many as 19 points.

The win was lead by Georgetown transfer Issac Copeland who had 30 points and 8 rebounds on the day. He went 12-14 from the field and 3-4 from 3 point land. A huge jump on his stats for the season.

The the junior forward has struggled a bit in the first four games of the season but seemed to find his rhythm against the Hawks. Before Sunday he was averaging only 7 points a game and shooting 34% from the field.

Anton Gill also seemed to step up his game against North Dakota. The senior guard who transferred from Louisville had 16 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Gill did not play in the first two games of the season against Eastern Illinois and North Texas with a groin injury but finally did see action in the loss against St. John.

Isiah Roby had another strong game off the bench with 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. His game has improved from last year when his focus seemed to wander at times and his aggressiveness was mismanaged. The sophomore forward has matured in the off season and it is paying off for him on the court.

Shooting Guard Glynn Watson Jr. ended the day with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. I imagine he is enjoying playing on a team where he is not one of only two players that are relied upon to score a majority of the points.

As a team the shot 53% from the field which was up considerably from the loss to St. John where they were held to 28%. Helping to show that this team can bounce back from bad nights on the court. Also, the problems that have haunted Nebraska for quite a while now such as scoring droughts and mismatched play was all but gone.

The Huskers head to Orlando over the Thanksgiving Holiday to play in the Advocare Invitation. Their first game is against the University of Central Florida on Thursday at 5:00pm CST.
