Nebraska Football: Could UCLA DL Coach Angus McClure Coming Back To Lincoln?

Mike Riley could be bringing back a old name to Lincoln to fill out the space Hank Hughes left.

With the dismissal of Hank Hughes as the Nebraska Cornhuskers Defensive Line Coach, there's been a wondering of when Mike Riley would fill the spot.

However, lately, there seems to be a flow of one name coming back to Lincoln, and it's a name that some may get scared about when they do the research.

Here's what we've heard about Nebraska's potential pursuit of #UCLA defensive line coach Angus McClure: https://t.co/MyiNWnG6OX

Appears that Nebraska #Huskers are in pursuit of Angus McClure as DL Coach. 20-yr coach vet McClure has been at UCLA https://t.co/FeT1VYSuoC

Scout has been reporting (through a paywall so I won't spill it all) that UCLA Bruins current Defensive Line coach Angus McClure wants to come back to Nebraska in the same role. He is also currently the Bruins' Recruiting Coordinator, which would be helpful in a spot that Nebraska needs both a coach and a recruiter in that spot.

Wait, you say return? Why yes, McClure would be returning to Lincoln as he spent '04 and '05 on Bill Callahan's staff, helping coach the Offensive Line as well as Special Teams. After he left Lincoln, he spent a year on Turner Gill's staff at Buffalo, doing double duty again as the OL coach and run game coordinator.

He left Liberty after the 2006 season to go to UCLA, where he's been ever since. One thing you notice is that everywhere he has been, he's put guys in the NFL. From Nebraska (Matt Slauson, Sam Koch, Chris Patrick, Lydon Murtha) to Buffalo (RB James Starks) and of course the Bruins.

Now, if you're first thought is WAIT, WE DESTROYED HIS LINE IN THE BOWL GAME, you wouldn't be that far off. UCLA's Run D was not very good this year, coming in at 98th ranked nationally. That is a down year, however, as in '14 the Bruins were a respectable 42nd nationally, while being 72nd the year before. It is a fair statement to wonder if coaching would be a dropoff with this hire, and one that Mike Riley, if he does take McClure, would have to address.

However, it's his recruiting acumen that would be much helpful with the Huskers. As far as himself, McClure has hit on some kids, most notably Eddie Vanderdoes originally. However, as RC, he's helped UCLA hit back to back 12th ranked classes in the 247 National recruiting rankings. The lowest UCLA has been in the last five years nationally is 19th.

It's definitely a risk for sure, as McClure seems to be a jack of all trades with his resume. However, by all accounts, it has been said that McClure was well liked in and around the area, and would be already familiar with what Nebraska has to deal with when it comes to recruiting issues. That alone puts him above anyone else, due to the fact that if you know what you're getting into, you can help adapt over it.

For a school that that realizes that not only do they have to be the best recruiting team in the Big Ten West, but also to catch up to the Ohio State and Michigan's in the world, Nebraska needs to get as many good recruiters as possible on campus.

Now, there may be zero fire to the smoke that comes from McClure's name being floated around. However, with the way that Mike Riley's hires have gone in the past year, the need for both a good coach and recruiter needs to be the balancing act.
