2022 NFL mock draft: Jaguars pick CB Derek Stingley Jr.

Even with a generational quarterback prospect like Trevor Lawrence, the Jacksonville Jaguars may still be in line for a top draft pick come this time next year. The offense will be serviceable, but I think it’s the defense that will need the most work when the season’s said and done.

And so does ESPN’s Todd McShay, who released a ridiculously early mock draft and thinks Jacksonville will go after a cornerback at the top of the first round.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars

Derek Stingley Jr., CB, LSU*

The Jaguars took Georgia cornerback Tyson Campbell in the second round this year, and they used the No. 9 overall pick on CJ Henderson in 2020. But Stingley is special and would be an immediate starter for the Jacksonville defense. He has great size at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds and produces in every area of the game. His six interceptions as a freshman in 2019 tied for the fifth most in the nation, and he was one of LSU’s best defenders in its national championship win that season.

That’s a lot of draft capital invested into cornerbacks over the past three drafts—two top-10 picks and a player in Tyson Campbell who was picked with the first pick after the first round. Sure, stopping the pass is important, but this would mean slotting one of your highest draft picks over the past three seasons into a nickel cornerback role which... isn’t ideal.
