The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Alabama Safety Ronnie Harrison in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, mostly a surprise because he was still available near the end of the third round. The Jaguars didn’t necessarily need a safety, but the value seemed too good to pass up and significantly improved their depth at the position while potentially giving them a future starter.

Here’s what some anonymous scouts and personnel people said about Richardson prior to the 2018 NFL Draft, via Bob McGinn.

“He is a jawbreaker tackler compared to Minkah.”

“Eddie Jackson did all the mental work (in 2016) and Minkah did it all this year. He’ll drop down as the dime guy and cover tight ends and slot receivers. He’s got some athletic ability. He didn’t run well.”

“Prototypical strong safety. He can be a violent striker but he’s more of an engulfing tackler. He’s a big presence in the alley. He’s tough to get around. He’s got a little better Coverage ability than you think. He won’t have a problem covering tight ends unless his eye discipline gets bad. Same qualities as Kam (Chancellor) but a better coverage player. Kam couldn’t cover anybody.”

“No, he’s not smart. Everybody tries to build him up as the guy but he’s not the guy.”

“He’s one of the most overrated guys at safety to me. He doesn’t really run that well and he doesn’t really do anything special in coverage. He’s a hitter but you can find hitters.” -- AFC Pro Personnel Director

From the sounds of it, Harrison was viewed as a classic box safety with better than average coverage ability, which is exactly what the Jaguars will be looking for at the position. It’s possible we could see Harrison get some early snaps as a rookie in some three safety packages on passing downs.
