Jaguars vs. 49ers series history: Jacksonville looks to end two-game skid

The West Coast has not favored the Jaguars overall.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in the 2017 NFL playoffs! I repeat, the Jacksonville Jaguars are in the playoffs!

But there is still some business to take care of, as the Jags look to win a division title, for the first time since 1999, with a win this week. And a bye week in the first round of the playoffs is not out of the question yet, either. That all starts this week against the San Francisco 49ers, a team that is hot right now with Jimmy Garoppolo under center.

Below is the 16th installment on the season of Jaguars series history records. Let’s recap previous San Francisco and Jacksonville matchups.

Series history

All-time series record: Tied 2-2

Last Jaguars win: Dec. 18, 2005 (10-9)

Last 49ers win: Oct. 27, 2013 (42-10)

Current Streak: San Francisco has won two in a row

Biggest Jaguars win: 41-3 (Sept. 12, 1999)

Biggest 49ers win: 42-10 (Oct. 27, 2013)

Interesting takeaway: Only one game out of four was decided by less than 17 points.

Quick thoughts: Simple enough — the Jaguars won the first two meetings and the 49ers have won the past two meetings. The 2005 game, which was Jacksonville’s last win against the 49ers, was the only close game in the series. The Jaguars improved to 10-4 that year, but struggled against a San Francisco team that just fell to 2-12, winning by a single point. The other three games were decided by 38, 17 and 32 points, respectively. Of course these two teams are not all of that familiar with each other. Jacksonville has historically struggled on the West Coast, recording just a 2-11 all-time record, but will look to turn over a new leaf during its first visit to Levi’s Stadium.

Previous Matchup:

Winner: 49ers

Score: 42-10

Date: Oct. 13, 2013

Location: Wembley Stadium, London

Team Stats: Jaguars — 228 passing yards, 90 rushing yards, 20 first downs

49ers — 177 passing yards, 221 rushing yards, 25 first downs

Quick recap: Remember when the Jaguars were really bad? Oh yeah, me either. But seriously 2013 was one of those years. This was Jacksonville’s first ever game in London, and though the Jags have played well there lately, this one did not go well. The trio of Colin Kaepernick, Kendall Hunter and Frank Gore torched the Jags on the ground, while Chad Henne, Maurice Jones-Drew and the gang couldn’t get anything going. Jacksonville ended up falling to 0-8 after this game.

Prior Matchup

Winner: 49ers

Score: 20-3

Date: Nov. 29, 2009

Location: Candlestick Park, San Francisco

Team Stats: Jaguars — 307 passing yards, 96 rushing yards, 18 first downs

49errs — 232 passing yards, 52 rushing yards, 15 first downs

Quick recap: The Jaguars never threatened here. The 49ers were up 17-0 before Jacksonville even got on the board with a field goal, and that was the only score the Jags were able to muster all game. Two turnovers by the Jaguars didn’t help, while Alex Smith had a highly efficient day with 232 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. This was the Jaguars’ first ever trip to San Francisco, and it was also the 49ers’ first ever win against Jacksonville.

Through the Decades

1990s: Jaguars 1-0

2000-2010: Tied 1-1

2011-Present: San Francisco 1-0

Quick thoughts: Easy to read: The Jaguars won the one matchup in the 1990s, and also won the second matchup in 2005. San Fran has taken the past two meetings in 2009 and 2013, respectively. The two franchises didn’t meet until 1999, Jacksonville’s fifth season of competition and its best ever thus far. There’s obviously not a lot of history between the two squads. We will see what happens in 2017.

Jacksonville can win the AFC South with a win or with a Tennessee Titans loss to the Los Angeles Rams. But I’m not a fan of backing into accomplishments. San Francisco is surging right now, and the Jags may struggle on the West Coast, but this is a different Jacksonville team. Jags take care of business on Sunday.
