The Jacksonville Jaguars offense was bad against the Los Angeles Chargers. Never mind that their defensive line forced us to abandon our run game and put the game squarely on Blake Bortles’ shoulders or that we had to pass 51 times. We scored just one offensive touchdown all game and while that drive was very, very good — both from Bortles and the offense as a whole — it was a diamond in the rough on Sunday.

But thankfully it was there.

Down 14-6 in the middle of the third quarter, Bortles and the offense took over at their 16-yard line. They had punted or turned the ball over on six of their seven drives so far. They needed points, preferably a touchdown because a field goal wasn’t going to mean much.

Play #1: 1st and 10 at JAX 16

To this point, Leonard Fournette hadn’t been involved very much as the Chargers were very good at taking away the run game. Nathaniel Hackett’s insistence to keep him getting touches was a good one.

Play #2: 2nd and 5 at JAX 21

Great timing route. Blake is such a rhythm guy and establishing a little confidence and momentum with short, easy passes like this is smart.

Play #3: 1st and 10 at JAX 27

The Jaguars will do this fake end-around at least once a game to either set up something down the seam or over the top. This time it’s to set up a screen, one the Chargers defend beautifully.

Play #4: 2nd and 10 at JAX 27

It’s a good thing Blake didn’t get the ball near his intended target or else it would have been intercepted. Fournette was well defended.

Play #5: 3rd and 10 at JAX 27

This is a staple of the Jaguars offense and it’s worked well almost every time they’ve run it. Marqise Lee’s speed is dangerous over the middle and Blake is surprisingly good at putting these where they need to be Hackett knows when to pull this one out — on the left hash with a lot of open grass on the right side of the field.

Play #6: 1st and 10 at JAX 46

Blake knew the rush was getting there so he had to get it away, but why not throw it to Keelan Cole on the left side of the field?

Play #7: 2nd and 10 at JAX 46

Beautifully thrown ball, courageous catch by Allen Hurns who is leaving himself vulnerable to a big hit.

Play #8: 1st and 10 at LAC 35

Blake has got to throw these a little better and Keelan has got to bring in catches he gets his hands on.

Play #9: 2nd and 10 at LAC 35

I’m glad Hackett waited until now to get Marcedes Lewis involved. He’s weapon as they get into the red zone or they’re trying to get close to it. Here the Chargers coverage breaks down and no one thinks to cover the 6’6” tight end.

Play #10: 1st and 10 at LAC 14

Again, if they’re not going to cover him, get it to Marcedes.

Play #11: 2nd and 2 at LAC 6

I included both of these angles because it’s such a great play overall by Blake. He’s on the move, away from defenders, and he has the vision to know that Lee will get open eventually — he just has to give him a second or two. Blake throws the ball at the last possible second and BOOM! touchdown.
