Sox Face Off Against Padres; Lose Another Low Scoring Game

The Red Sox are finishing up their last west coast trip with a 3 game series with the Padres.  The Padres are the basement dwellers in the NL West, so the Sox hoped to get some wins under their belts and hopefully take a run at getting back into 1st place in the AL East.  The Sox had former Padre Drew Pomeranz on the mound vs. Edwin Jackson for San Diego.  Pomeranz pitched well, but since he got no run support and gave up a 2 run homer, he’d end up getting the loss.  The Sox tried to rally in the later innings, but would end up coming up a run short.

The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the 4th inning when Drew Pomeranz made his one pitching mistake.  Pomeranz gave up a 2 run homer to Rosales to put the Padres up 2-0.  Brock Holt tracked that ball and tried to snatch it out of the stands, but he came up just a tad short.  The Sox offense on the other hand wasn’t able to get anything going against Jackson.  The Sox had faced him numerous times during his stints in the AL, however they wouldn’t have his number yesterday.  Jackson pitched through the 7th inning and wouldn’t give up a single run.

Pomeranz wouldn’t make it as deep.  Pomeranz ended up leaving in the middle of the 6th inning when he got two outs, but then gave up a double to Dickerson.  Pomeranz would be out and Robbie Ross Jr. would come into the game to finish the inning off.  Ross got the final out to close the book on Pomeranz’s outing.  His pitching line was 105 pitches, 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 5 Ks.  Robbie Ross Jr. came back out and pitched himself a scoreless 7th inning.  The Sox finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the 8th inning when birthday boy Chris Young hit a Pinch Hit solo home run.  Sox 1-2.  The Sox had a great chance to tie the game when Hill pinch hit and got a double.  Pedroia then hit a sac grounder to move him over to 3rd base with only one out.  Sandy Leon came into the game to pinch hit for Holt with a chance to tie the game or take the lead.  Leon ended up striking out and the ball then hit him so he couldn’t advance on the play.  Hill initially looked like he was gonna score on the play when the ball went to the backstop, but was sent back to 3rd base because the play was dead once the ball hit Leon.  Bogaerts then ended up striking out to end the inning and the Sox rally.  Joe Kelly came out of the bullpen in the bottom of the 8th and had himself a dominant inning before handing it off to the Sox offense in the top of the 9th.  Hanley Ramirez got on with a single and then with two outs David Ortiz came out to a thundering applause to pinch hit.  Unfortunately for the Sox, Papi wouldn’t be the hero as he flew out to centerfield to end the game.

Red Sox 1  Padres 2  BOXSCORE

WP: Jackson (4-5)  LP: Pomeranz (2-4)  SV: Maurer (8)
