Pressure, what pressure?

Eric Dier recently commented that Tottenham don't want to use youth as an excuse for buckling under any Pressure, which rather echoes several of the traits of success I have been writing about this season. The main one being that winners don't make excuses, losers do.

What is pressure though? Google it and the top answer I get is:

noun: pressure
  1. 1.
continuous physical force exerted on or against an object by something in contact with it.
"the gate was buckling under the pressure of the crowd outside"
    • the force per unit area exerted by a fluid against a surface with which it is in contact.
  2. 2.
the use of persuasion or intimidation to make someone do something.
"backbenchers put pressure on the government to provide safeguards"
    • the influence or effect of someone or something.
"oil prices came under some downwards pressure"
    • a sense of stressful urgency caused by having too many demands on one's time or resources.

verb: pressure; 3rd person present: pressures; past tense: pressured; past participle: pressured
gerund or present participle: pressuring
  1. 1.
attempt to persuade or coerce (someone) into doing something.
"it might be possible to pressure him into resigning"

Pressure is an external force and thus it is something you choose to feel or choose not to feel. being external it can be controlled, you can either let it in or not, you can channel it into motivation or let it eat you and have you playing in fear.

Clearly it can enhance your game or diminish from it, it is talked about at FA Cup Finals, nobody knows how each player is going to react to the occasion.

Supporters feel pressure because they can do nothing to change the outcome of games, apart from shout, sing and generally add to the positive environment surrounding the club. They all don't however, many let fear in and they start to question the decisions Pochettino makes, despite having no experience in the field themselves.

They already want someone to blame, they aspire to failure while wanting to cheer success, a success they have in fact done their best to prevent, even though they don't know they are doing it. What I do doesn't make a difference they will argue, then why are you singing and shouting if you think you make no difference, indeed why are you bothering to turn up?

Manchester City is just another three point game, the players can't be considering what will happen if we win, if we lose etc. They have to just focus on the game plan and the three points, the rest will take care of itself. Doing that and you are eliminating the pressure everyone else feels. That is unlikely to happen in its entirety, it is how you handle your mind thta will determine the affect any perceived pressure has.

We are back to the discussion I was having two years ago about mentality and thr traits we needed to put in place for success. This is the time when we see how we are doing, this and the remaining games. What has happened in the past has no relation to what will happen in the future. This is a different set of players with a different manager who understands the importance of mentality on a players performance and on the game.

The successful welcome challenges, they don't fear them.
