Arsenal won the Emirates cup on Sunday even though Sevilla won the game 2-1. Arsenal won the trophy due to the fact that they scored more goals by Sevilla in the competition.
But lets move away from the game and to the post-match press conference where Arsene Wenger dropped a bombshell, saying he was ready to lose his key players for free next summer.
According to the French manager, it would sound strange to let players like Ozil and Sanchez leave for free. But he thinks it is the beginning of a new trend which he predicts would occur more often in the future.
Wenger explained: “Not an issue (for players to have less than 12 months on their contracts.”
“I think it’s an ideal situation. Because everyone has to perform.”
The Arsenal boss also hinted that Ozil was planning to run down his contract.
“Yes, I think in the future you will see it more and more.” he continued.
“Why? Because the transfers are so high even for normal players, you will see more and more players going into the final year of the contract because no club will want to pay the amount demanded.”
“I’m convinced in the next ten years it will become usual.”
He was also confident their contract lengths had nothing to do with their performances: “When you’re a football player you perform until the last day of your contract. Whether you have two or one year left it doesn’t change. You want to play and do well.”
“Do you really think they sit in the dressing room and think, ‘Oh, I have one year to go I will not play well today’. Where does that come from? When you are a football player you want to play well, what does that have to do with the length of your contract. It’s amazing.”
As many as eight Arsenal players have less than 12 months left on their deal. The players include Santi Cazorla, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs, Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Mathieu Debuchy.
