Not a laughing matter as Jose Mourinho explains why he gave Marcos Rojo a banana to eat during their Europa game against Rostov

After their away game at that horrible pitch in Russia, United were back to familiar turf on Thursday night. Manchester United welcomed FC Rostov to Old Trafford for the second-leg of their Europa League clash.

The Red Devils snuck into the quarter-finals thanks to a goal from Juan Mata sealing a 2-1 aggregate win.

However, a curious moment played out during the game as Mourinho handed a banner to Rojo.

United had played over an hour with only 10 men against the Russians. And Mourinho revealed the defender was fatigued and asked for a banner.

He said: ‘I don’t know, if you were tired anytime in your life?’

‘I was tired many times and I know what is the body’s limits and the body needing anything, anything.

‘The player [Marcos Rojo] asked for a banana and banana is… it’s not to laugh. It’s not to laugh at all but to respect the players in their limits. They give absolutely everything.’
