The fate of Gilas Pilipinas to Rio Olympics may not be fully determine tonight but a lose would mean that there’s no gatepass at all to the big event. Gilas will take on New Zealand in Group stage on Wednesday, start time at 9:00 ET / 9:00 PM local time, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Gilas suffered a 93-84 loss to France in the opening game in which the duo guards of Jayson Castro and Terrence Romeo combined for 33 points. A times even San Antonio Spurs point guard couldn’t guard any of them as they exploded especially in the first half. Gilas was succumbed by the tight defense of France, limiting Andray Blatche to only 21 points. Moreover, France adjusted well in the second half after a tight game at the half.
Gilas headcoach Tab Baldwin stated that they have a game to play and that they need to forget what transpired last night.
“24 hrs takes care a lot of things in life. Putting this loss behind us and the importance of tomorrow’s game should give us everything that we need. I don’t think our coaching staff needs to do any motivational talk: we understand the task, and we’re pretty confident with what the guys are capable of.”
Baldwin, a Kiwi-American, coached New Zealand from 2001 to 2006 and led the team to a stunning semifinal run in the 2002 FIBA World Championship. Without a doubt, Baldwin has some knowledge to topple New Zealand.
