The second-year Safety showed up on the biggest night of the preseason.

On Friday night, second-year Safety Dymonte Thomas was dy-no-mite! (sorry).

With safeties Will Parks(knee contusion) and Su’a Cravens(Knee) sitting out Friday nights week three matchup against Washington, the Broncos were thin at safety. This meant that they would turn to first-year safety Dymonte Thomas to fill the role of “dime backer” in place of Will Parks who was in for the injured Su’a Cravens and he did not disappoint.

Thomas finished the night with 5 total tackles and 1 pass deflection. In two preseason games(Thomas sat out the week two preseason game due to injury), Thomas has 10 total tackles and 1 pass deflection.

Last night, Thomas earned some valuable first-team reps against the Washington offense and he performed well in coverage and in run defense. Both of Thomas’s notable plays came on third-down when he made two tackles that prevented a first-down and effectively ended the possession for Washington.

After the game, Head Coach Vance Joseph was asked about Thomas’s play and he said the first-year safety did a “nice job”.

“He did a nice job. You know, Will Parks was a game-time decision from his knee from last week’s game and he(Thomas) practiced two days at dime and he did a fine job, so that was nice to see that from him and for us obviously. That’s a big-time position for us.”

The Broncos have an open roster spot at safety behind Justin Simmons, Darian Stewart, Su’a Cravens, and Will Parks.

First-year safety Jamal Carter was a shoe-in for this fifth safety spot, but he, unfortunately, will miss the entire season with a hamstring injury. The Broncos did sign veteran Shamarko Thomas to potentially fill this role, but he left the game with an eye injury which required him to visit a local hospital. So this leaves the Broncos once again very thin at safety but does open the door for Thomas.

Thomas is a 6’2”, 200lb safety that possesses top notch athleticism for a player of his size. He went undrafted during the 2017 NFL Draft but did latch on with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent. He performed well enough throughout the summer to latch on to the Broncos 10-man Practice Squad and stayed there until late into the 2017 season when he was promoted to the active roster. During those three games, Thomas totaled 8 total tackles and gained some valuable regular season reps.

Now with the fifth safety spot open, Thomas may have played himself into a roster spot with tonight’s impressive performance. The Broncos have one final preseason game remaining, and Thomas figures to receive a good amount of playing time during this finale against the Arizona Cardinals. This will provide him with one last chance to impress the Broncos coaches and hopefully making the Broncos 53-man roster.
