The fifth pick in the draft is filled with possibilities. No one knows what will happen, and it is driving some in Broncos Country a little whacky.

Sitting here waiting for the NFL Draft has been difficult for Denver Broncos fans. Now, as the draft approaches, it is clear that the most volatile pick is the No. 5 pick. The options are seemingly endless, and many in Broncos Country will only be happy with one result. What that result will be remains to be seen.

On the latest MHR Radio Podcast, Ian St. Clair and I had Jeff Essary, Chris Hart, and Laurie Lattimore-Volkmann on to discuss the upcoming draft. The most clear statement that can be made is the fifth pick is the hardest to predict. Will the Broncos trade back? Will Denver trade up? Will there be a QB of the future on the board, or will Denver be happy to take a guard? Whatever the Broncos do come Thursday, hopefully they add more swag to the lineup. There are just so many options. Obviously, Ian and I have been shoveling coal on the Baker Mayfield train (Jeff is the conductor, so he is driving), but reports are now saying that he might be the No. 1 pick to Cleveland. Many fans like Quenton Nelson, and some think he could be the best player in the draft. Perhaps Saquon Barkley will slide to five, and Elway won’t be able to pass up the talent. That’s just on the offensive side of the ball.

The options on defense are even more intriguing. Minkah Fitzpatrick could be a huge addition to the defensive backfield. Pairing Bradley Chubb with Von Miller would terrify opposing offensive lines. Roquan Smith is the only player in the draft aside from Baker Mayfield that gives me the tingles. I would love to see Denver walk away from round one adding a guy who can be a huge upgrade at inside linebacker.

And then there are all the trade possibilities. Trade back with the Buffalo Bills or trade up to the second pick with the New York Giants. Maybe they Broncos are looking to move all the way up to the first pick. Could Elway make a big move with the fifth pick and then trade back into the first round to grab another top level talent?

Any conversation about the Broncos draft could contain as many possibilities as there are leaves on a tree. While it is easy to fall into conversations with people who agree with each other on Twitter, it is just as likely that asking five different people about Denver’s pick will result in five different answers.

The only positive to come out of all this consternation is that time will continue to march forward. We will all know soon what the Broncos are able to do with the fifth pick. Whatever they do, hopefully it brings swag. The question is, what will be the reaction in Broncos Country?
