Broncos’ Draft Day picks, order set

With 10 overall picks, Denver now knows exactly where those draft selections are slated.

Good morning, Broncos Country!

Things are starting to get interesting as teams are announcing “unofficial” trade deals days before free agency is set to open next week and two months before the NFL Draft begins.

And the anticipation of what Broncos might do in free agency makes its position in the upcoming NFL Draft even more intriguing.

Which makes the 10 overall draft picks for the Broncos enticing when it comes to speculating on all the possibilities.

And thanks to a coin flip last week between the 49ers and Raiders in which the 49ers won, we now know exactly where the Broncos are slated to draft - at least until Draft Day!

The Broncos acquired the 109th-overall pick from San Francisco based on their 2017 draft-day trade that sent RB Kapri Bibbs to the Niners. They also have one compensatory pick and a fifth-round pick for dealing Ty Sambrailo to Atlanta.

Interesting scenarios

Although we have too frequently over-analyzed the implications of free agency on the Broncos’ draft picks, let’s do it a little longer. After all, we still have a few days of incessant speculation!

If the Broncos’ somehow miraculously find enough money to lure Kirk Cousins to Denver (or Von makes a personal visit to D.C.), then the first-round draft pick at No. 5 will definitely not go to a quarterback.

The Broncos could go with Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson, who some draftnicks have named as the best overall pick in the entire 2018 draft.

Perhaps they go for a game-changer like Saquon Barkley, but it appears all too likely the Browns or Giants will nab him immediately.

Or maybe the Broncos trade down for more picks later in the first or early in the second round to maximize that No. 5 spot?

With a deep class of running backs and corners, Broncos could look at nabbing some top-tier talent in those positions or seek to fortify the offensive line and possibly even add another edge rusher. Some possibilities (thanks, Scotty!) include:

CB: Isaiah Oliver, Jaire Alexander, Mike Hughes, Carlton Davis

OL: Mike McGlinchey (T); Will Hernandez (G)

EDGE: Marcus Davenport

RB: Derrius Guice, Ronald Jones

Of course, if the Broncos don’t land Cousins - and it is trending more and more in the Vikings’ favor for the former Redskins’ QB - then the Broncos have an important choice to make.

Do they aim for a second-tier free-agent quarterback and likely stay at No. 5 (or even trade up) to get a “best player available,” or do they gamble on a game-changing rookie QB with the fifth overall pick...which it appears would most likely be Baker Mayfield or possibly Josh Allen, with an outside chance of Josh Rosen.

I’ve made my opinion known already, but with any scenario, it’s shaping up to be a fun draft with a lot of high-stakes picks for John Elway come April.
