It will be Cousins or Mayfield...maybe Rosen.
ESPN's draft guru Todd McShay has released his latest 2018 NFL mock draft and has the Broncos unsurprisingly going with a quarterback with their fifth overall pick. That quarterback being 2017 Heisman winning quarterback, former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Here is what McShay had to say about his decision to mock Mayfield to the Broncos.
5. Denver Broncos
Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma
The Broncos have to accept that they missed on Paxton Lynch (No. 26 overall in 2016) and are still looking for a franchise QB. This is another potential landing spot for Cousins or another free-agent QB, but if Denver doesn’t get one in free agency, it will likely use an early pick on a signal-caller. John Elway was at the Senior Bowl and scouted both Mayfield and Josh Allen. This will be a really interesting pick if both are on the board. Mayfield had an impressive week in Mobile and checked the biggest remaining box with his measurements (6-foot, 216 pounds, 9½-inch hand span). He’s rising.
McShay says the Broncos need to accept that 2016 first rounder Paxton Lynch has busted, and I think they have. They figure to be serious contenders for impending free-agent quarterback Kirk Cousins and likely other free agents at quarterback and appear to be scouting the top quarterback prospects heavily. So yeah, they already moved on. It is a small group of people in the fanbase that need to move on.
The Broncos appear to have some level of interest in Mayfield. They requested to have him on their Senior Bowl roster so they could have a week to get to know him better. There are also reports/rumors out there that the Broncos are really interested in Mayfield. Sporting News’s Eric Galko had this to say about Mayfield.
— Baker Mayfield will dominate the 2018 NFL Draft process just like Deshaun Watson did a season ago. But how high can the Heisman Trophy winner go? It’s possible (but not likely) that the Browns will want to draft him in the top five. But Mayfield has plenty of fans around the NFL. He’s a lot more like Russell Wilson and Drew Brees than Johnny Manziel, and NFL teams firmly believe that. Nearly every team in the top 14 will be interested, led by the Broncos or Redskins (whichever doesn’t sign Kirk Cousins), Bills(in a trade-up), Jets and Browns. It’d be a surprise if he drops below the top 14 picks.
So if the Broncos do not sign Kirk Cousins or acquire a starter through free agency I believe the connection between the Broncos and Baker Mayfield will only continue to get stronger and stronger.
