Brock Osweiler likely goes from hero to the bench.
Denver Broncos Head Coach Vance Joseph announced earlier this afternoon that they have officially placed quarterback Trevor Siemian on the season-ending injured reserve list. Siemian injured his shoulder during Thursday Night’s game against the Colts.
Vance Joseph: Trevor Siemian’s season is over. He will go on IR. No surgery needed for his left shoulder injury, just “rest and rehab."— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 15, 2017
Joseph also states that Siemian will avoid surgery to his oft-injured shoulder and will just need rest and rehab to heal this injury.
So the Broncos quarterback continue to go around and around once again. It went from Trevor Siemian to Brock Osweiler to Paxton Lynch then back to Trevor Siemian and then Brock Osweiler again last night. Will the Broncos keep the wheel spinning and name Paxton Lynch the starter for the remaining two games of the season? It sure sounds that way.
When Joseph was asked if Brock Osweiler will start next Sunday against Washington, he replied with “I’m not sure”.
“I’m not sure. We’ve got two healthy guys there. We’re going to have a staff meeting on Monday morning and see who’s best for us. Paxton being a young guy, we want to see him play more, so that part will have some bearing there. So we’ll see. Brock played really well last night. He made some big-time throws and his leadership showed. He played with great poise and he took care of the football. That’s going to be a long and hard conversation.”
The big give away here is “Paxton being a young guy, we want to see him play more...”. We all know who is making this call(John Elway of course) and they need to see Lynch in extended action before heading into the offseason. If Lynch did not get injured during the Oakland game he likely would have been starting the past two games and finishing out the season as the starting quarterback for the Broncos. So now that he is apparently healthy enough to hit the field again, it only makes sense to throw him back in the starting lineup once again.
Brock Osweiler has earned the starting job and has consistently been the Broncos best starter this year, but he continues to get benched in favor of Lynch. To me, this shows the Broncos lack of commitment to Osweiler going forward.
Nothing is official as of now and we likely will not hear anything until early next week, but all signs point to Paxton Lynch Starting against Washington next week.
